Gimme Some

Okay wow.

I had an epiphany today and feel as bright as a block of wood.

Did you know that people who subsist on various government program funding can actually file for and receive income tax refunds?

I sure didn't until lately.

This is my A-ha: People who live on and survive from the government as their "income" can complete a tax return, claim dependents who don't live with them and receive LARGE refunds. Amazing.

Story collector that I am,  I recently learned about a combo family (they aren't married, have one kid in common but use the words 'Mom' and 'Dad' to all kids in the house) who will get to file and receive a refund of $15,000. Or, $7,500 each. Yes - that's correct. They plan to receive $15K.
They depend on subsidies for their heat, electricity and food and will "get back" enough to pay off other debts. There's another divorced father who has no minor children living with him, hasn't paid child support and defaulted on his mortgage on purpose. He claimed kids living with his ex and got $10K. He even claimed his ex!

Gulp.

As a middle classer, I am used to having the annual tax columns total to disfavor me and feeling sick to my stomach about writing a check for many dollars each year. We worry about where we can take the extra debit from. (While the government so easily spends our hard earnings on supposed  "needs"). Every once in awhile, we feel blessed and "get back" a couple hundred dollars. I feel like a slug who just misses the correct window and even my parents who had bigger income going on never received such a rebate. They just celebrated lower amounts due.

So how is it that people who depend on subsidies can legitimately apply for and receive a tax rebate from the government?

Another person depending on the government's good grace told me about the year they - gasp - didn't get anything back, asking if I could believe that. As if Santa had skipped his chimney.

Yes, I am angry. I am in the middle class. The one the wealthy dump their write-offs on and the one the "poor" depend on for their subsistence. America's faulty economy rests on the backs of people like  me. Every dollar I earn to get ahead inches me into another tax bracket that sucks my bank account. If I don't work, we struggle. If I do work, we pay for it later.

Are you like me wondering why there is such a push to teach people to depend on the government instead of taking their own action? Many of my clients are excited to be declared "permanently disabled" by the court so they can receive a whopping $700-800 each month for life.

I'm concerned that the increasing number of Americans who depend upon some form of government assistance to live each month (that is now 49%) is weakening the integrity of our country every day. It's so nice to eeek by there is no incentive to try to work even part-time. They are training their children to look for help and blame life circumstances.

Assistance is supposed to be temporary - not a way of life.
